Let’s build something.

Twenty years ago, Kirby Anderson brought his vision into reality and in the process, has changed the face of countless residential and commercial buildings with his expertise in exteriors. All the while, the company evolved alongside consumer needs and industry trends, branching out from exteriors to include elements of construction, framing and project management. Today, Alberta Sound Exteriors provides a variety of services, mainly in the residential sector, for single family, multiplex homes and apartment buildings, using a vast range of exterior cladding materials to suit the growing needs of its customers.

“Over the past 20 years, Alberta Sound Exteriors has grown to be a leader in siding exteriors, all while maintaining a family-run culture,” says Anderson. He’s a long ways from the start of two desks and a phone in the living room of his home, but the family values and mission of excellence that came with the humble beginnings are still core to the brand – which now boasts 20 employees in the office.  “The most rewarding aspect of Alberta Sound is providing a workplace where everyone feels like they have a ‘home,’ fulfilling my initial motivation for starting the company.”

“I used to work alongside my brother to do the siding installs,” Anderson reminisces. “Now, we have upwards of 40 subcontractor crews in the field.

“A memorable moment for Alberta Sound Exteriors was moving into our own building. This provided a sense of stability and control of our company and its success. Another significant milestone was achieving consistent positive cash flow, reducing the financial risks of the early days and allowing us to easily prioritize payments to installers and suppliers.”

The reason for the success of Alberta Sound Exteriors goes beyond the customer service for which they are known and widely praised.

“Our slogan, found on our merchandise, is ‘Safe and Sound,’” says Anderson. “It carries a warm feeling and represents both a safe work environment and the quality of our finished products.”

Agility is a very big part of Alberta Sound Exterior’s DNA. An industry challenge is the ever-changing needs of customers, requiring the company to continuously adapt in terms of products, requests, demands and building codes. Over the past two decades, Anderson and his leadership team have become adept at adapting quickly to the needs of the industry, and when it comes to projects, this agility is underscored by a consistent goal – leveraging innovation.

“We strive to provide innovation in all our projects, showing outstanding leadership in safety and continued willingness to grow with our customers as their ideas and designs expand,” says Anderson. “As our city continues to grow, we are doing our part to contribute to solutions for the increasing demand for housing options within Edmonton and surrounding areas, cornering the market in multi-unit apartment buildings, multiplex homes and single-family homes.”

A great example of this is seen in the construction and management aspect of the Ormsby 2 window replacement project, where prefabricated cutting-edge technology was used to create energy efficient window solutions that reduce environmental impact. They were installed with techniques that were fast, efficient and minimized disruption for the building’s occupants.

“Appointing project managers with expertise in sustainable building practices ensured the coordination and execution of the client’s overall vision,” Anderson adds. “Project managers designated a team of skilled contractors with experience in high-tech installations and selected suppliers known for innovation and quality. We developed designs that not only improved energy efficiency, but improved comfort and aesthetics.”

The agility that sees Alberta Sound Exteriors moving with the times allows them to be early adopters of the technologies and the products that impact the construction industry.

“A significant shift in exterior cladding over the last few years has been the increased demand for curb appeal, involving a wider variety of products for colour and texture,” explains Anderson. “Additionally, the biggest change in internal processes has been the development of in-house processes and systems for recording and documenting job details, providing better customer service through readily available digital records.”

Alberta Sound Exteriors is not just content to change the face of buildings. The company is just as intent on building up the communities in which it operates.

“We donate to various charities, initially focusing on supporting the schooling and extracurricular activities of the team’s children and evolving to support our customers and vendors in their charities,” says Anderson. “Our philosophy is to accommodate as many fundraiser/donation requests as possible. Our charitable support has grown over the years, including contributions to the small communities in Eastern Canada where I and many staff members have roots. Recently, we raised funds for a golf cart for a seniors home, which allows greater ease for the residents to get out and enjoy the town. Additionally, the Alberta Sound Construction & Management branch is a large supporter of the John Cameron Changing Lives Foundation: Crescendo and Singing Christmas Tree.”

Among the recognitions and awards Alberta Sound Exteriors earned over the years, Anderson expresses pride in the recognition from the Siding Contractors Association of Alberta (SCAA), an organization that Alberta Sound is actively supported by and through which they have won multiple awards for several projects.

Anderson says, “The SSCA has been a huge support in the growth of Alberta Sound through the years, developing standards within the industry and providing support in the siding community. I would also like to acknowledge our valuable customers who have been instrumental in the growth and development of Alberta Sound over the past 20 years. These likeminded companies, with high standards of communication and respectful principles, have served as mentors to me and the Alberta Sound team.”

Looking ahead, Anderson anticipates a continued steady pace for Alberta Sound Exteriors. He has a growing focus on integrating staff members to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability. The goal is to find compatible team members to grow and learn within the industry, who will continue the established company culture and contribute to its success for many more years to come.
