The cost of living is on the rise. Groceries, gas, utilities – there is just no way of getting around it. Everyone is affected from homeowners to businesses. In true Edmontonian fashion, however, we yell a collective “pivot!” and simply find the workarounds. For many this summer, that means a staycation.
What is a staycation? That is when you become a tourist in your own region instead of exploring places further from home.
According to Explore Edmonton, our city’s economic impact of events alone in 2023 was $329 million. That includes KDays, Edmonton Pro Rodeo, sports and cultural events. Layer on top of that the many attractions like Fort Edmonton Park, Royal Alberta Museum, the summer attractions at Snow Valley (such as the Aerial Park Tower and glamping domes) and it’s easy to see why Edmonton attracts about 6 million visitors annually.
However, when is the last time you have visited any of those attractions? Or done the Art Walk? The Fan Expo? Enjoyed the Muttart? This summer, take a staycation. It’s the ultimate way to have a great vacation while helping local businesses thrive during these challenging times. There are no shortages of venues, restaurants, attractions and events to explore. Let’s look closer at three must-haves to put on your list.
Rockin’ Robyn’s Diner
www.rockinrobyns.com – 16604 109 Ave NW
This vintage 1950s styled diner is celebrating a Best in Edmonton award after landing in the top six breakfast restaurants in the city. The all-day breakfast is a hit, alongside the burgers, shakes and mile high pies. The location is tucked away yet easy to find – just look for the very long lineup of people milling about outside waiting for a seat! Diners are given a buzzer and can roam the nearby shops while they wait; and it is well worth the wait.
Owner and chef Robyn Lockhard says about the diner experience she created, “It is so unique and I don’t feel that there is anything else like it in Edmonton. I love that we have managed to create something so timeless for so many people. I love the awesome staff I have, the great food and eclectic vibe of the environment!”
When asked about the constant lineups, she notes, “I feel both gratitude and surprise. I am grateful that people in Edmonton have embraced and love my little diner enough to wait.”
A fun fact about the name is that her childhood nickname was Rockin’ Robyn.
“The very first person I told in my family that I was going to open a restaurant was my Aunty Janice and she said to me, ‘Well you just have to call it Rockin’ Robyn’s!”
Alberta Aviation Museum

Flying onto this list is a museum where history is interactive and fun.
“Locals should consider visiting the Alberta Aviation Museum during a staycation for a unique and enriching experience. Not only does it offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich aviation history of Alberta, but it also provides an opportunity to learn about the significant role aviation has played in the region’s development,” says Sarah Svanda, marketing advancement coordinator. “From vintage aircraft to interactive exhibits, the museum offers something for everyone, making it a perfect destination for families, history enthusiasts and anyone interested in aviation.”
Just how interactive does it get? “Book an amazing guided tour this summer with the option to add on flight simulators,” Svanda advises.
One exhibit that cannot be missed is the Starfighter and the B-25.
“These iconic aircraft represent significant milestones in aviation history and offer visitors a chance to marvel at their engineering brilliance. Additionally, exploring the restoration area during volunteer hours provides a behind-the-scenes look at the meticulous work that goes into preserving these historic aircraft, making it a must-see experience for aviation enthusiasts,” says Svanda.
There is always something exciting going on in the restoration bay, and this year is no exception.
“Currently in the restoration bay, visitors can witness the ongoing work on two rare Bell Aircraft P-39 Airacobra Second World War fighter planes,” explains Svanada. “This project, conducted in partnership with the Reynolds Alberta Museum Foundation, showcases the dedication and expertise of the museum’s restoration team in preserving these historically significant aircraft for future generations to appreciate and admire.”
The Perron District
perrondistrict.ca – Downtown St. Albert
Now that you’ve had an award-winning meal at Rockin’ Robyn’s Diner and flew back in time at the Alberta Aviation Museum, where to next? Get ready for a shopping and strolling experience like no other as you head to St. Albert’s Perron District.
Rosanna Fischer, 2024 volunteer chair of the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, says, “The Perron District is the vibrant heart of St. Albert, offering a rich blend of cultural, recreational and shopping experiences that cater to all ages and interests. This summer, the district is buzzing with activities and events that make it a must-visit destination. Beyond the regular attractions of unique local shops, exquisite dining options and scenic walking paths, the district hosts an array of events that bring the community together in celebration of summer. Whether you’re looking for family friendly activities, a romantic evening out, or a cultural experience, the Perron District promises memorable moments.”
There is free parking in the District and it is easily walkable and accessible. In addition to the historic buildings, eateries, and boutique shops, a winding walking path hugs the river. Why not take your signature burger from Jack’s Burger Shop or your pastry from BreadLove to one of the many benches or parks in the area? You’ll need your camera to capture the art installations that add vibrancy along the way. Whether you want a book from a local author, to browse the latest exhibits in the museum or to satisfy your sweet tooth at Candy Bouquet, there is so much to explore.
Fischer is happy to share the upcoming events happening in the District this summer.
“The St. Albert Farmers’ Market (June 8 – October 12) is the largest outdoor farmers’ market in Canada. It features over 280 vendors weekly. Visitors can enjoy fresh produce, artisan foods, unique arts and crafts and a lively atmosphere every Saturday. This market not only supports local farmers and artisans but also serves as a community gathering place that enhances the vibrancy of the District.”
Approximately 20K – 22K people enjoy this market annually.
She also notes, “Throughout the summer months, the Perron District hosts the Plaza Series, an assortment of live performances held in the outdoor plazas. These events feature local musicians and performers, showcasing the rich artistic talent of our community. It’s a perfect way to spend a summer evening, enjoying free entertainment against the backdrop of our beautiful district.
“From August 6 to 10, enjoy Rock’N August. This is a week-long festival celebrating classic cars and 1950s rock and roll music. It’s a fantastic opportunity for car enthusiasts and music lovers to indulge in their passions while exploring the various attractions that our district has to offer.”
