In a little over a year from now we’ll find ourselves on the brink of Edmonton’s next municipal election, and I can’t help but find myself reflecting on my own journey in civic politics. Back in 2021, when I decided to run for mayor, I wasn’t driven by political ambition. I ran because I love this city. I grew up on the north side in the community of Beverly, raised my family here and have spent the later part of my career striving to make Edmonton a better place. Working in the economic development ecosystem also taught me that city council can either be a city’s greatest accelerator or its greatest friction point.
While I wasn’t elected, I am proud of the campaign we ran and the conversations we started. We had a diverse team, engaged people not normally involved in politics and presented new ideas and policies focused on making Edmonton a city that worked for its citizens.
Edmonton’s future depends on the active participation of its citizens, and now, more than ever, it’s crucial for each of us to take a role in shaping the direction of our city by casting an educated vote for its future leaders.
As we near another election, I have a simple ask: get involved! Start by researching the candidates who will be on your ballot. Understand their platforms, their values and their vision for Edmonton.
Volunteer for a campaign that resonates with you. It’s a powerful way to contribute to the political process, and it offers a firsthand look at the work that goes into running for office. Your support through time or money makes a difference in helping to elect leaders who reflect your values and priorities. Despite the changes that may come forward with political parties, trust me when I say how important it is to really get involved.
Vote! Only 38 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in the 2021 election. That means that a small group of people made a decision that impacts all of us.
Edmonton is at a crossroads – we all know this. The decisions made in the next election will have a lasting impact on our community. It’s essential that we elect leaders who are not only capable but understand the implications of their decisions on the citizens of our city; leaders who recognize the unique challenges our city faces and who have the courage to make bold decisions for the benefit of all Edmontonians.
This isn’t just about electing a mayor or city council. It’s about building a city that works for everyone. A city where basic needs are met, core services are delivered at a high quality, where safety is prioritized and where small and medium-sized businesses can thrive.
While I won’t be running in this election, I’m still invested in the future of Edmonton. I’ll continue to advocate for the issues that matter, and I’ll continue to encourage others to step up and lead. Our city’s potential is limitless. Together we can ensure that Edmonton remains a place we want to live and are proud to call home.
