The future of work isn’t a distant vision – it’s unfolding now. Industries are evolving at a breakneck pace, reshaped by automation, artificial intelligence and rapid technological advances. The jobs of tomorrow will require more than technical know-how; young professionals must develop adaptability, confidence and strong support networks to navigate this unpredictable landscape.

The most valuable employees won’t just be those with specialized skills; they will be those who can think critically, embrace change and take initiative. A key predictor of success in this evolving job market is self-efficacy, which is the belief in one’s ability to achieve goals. This mindset gives young people the confidence to take risks, learn from failure and persist through challenges, setting them apart in a competitive workforce.

But success doesn’t happen in isolation. A strong professional network provides young people with guidance, opportunities and a sense of belonging. Encouraging them to build these connections early—through internships, networking events and mentorship programs—can shape their career trajectory.

I believe mentorship plays a pivotal role in this process. When business leaders invest in guiding the next generation, they help instill resilience and confidence. Having a mentor, someone other than a parent or teacher, empowers young people to step outside their comfort zones and pursue bold, ambitious goals.

At Junior Achievement Northern Alberta, mentorship has been at the heart of our programs for over 60 years. Through hands-on learning, students gain valuable insights from business and community leaders who help them to build confidence and develop real-world skills.

Mentorship is particularly vital for young women, who often face unique barriers in the workforce. She LEADS, a JA women’s mentorship movement, connects aspiring young women with experienced female leaders for guidance and inspiration.
