When Mark Lacoursiere spent nearly two decades building Pillar Contracting Ltd. into a trusted name in streetlight and utility infrastructure across Alberta, he was doing more than running a business. He was laying the groundwork for what would come next. That reputation – earned job by job, relationship by relationship – became the foundation for ASAP Traffic Inc.

This year, ASAP Traffic celebrates a milestone – the first 10 years.

ASAP Traffic is a full-service provider of traffic control, traffic safety products, and industrial painting and sandblasting in Alberta. The company pairs fast response times with high-quality work and a corporate culture rooted in ownership and empowerment. However, its real differentiator is the full scope of flagging, sign manufacturing, equipment rental and product sales, all under one roof.

In 2016, Mark launched the company out of Fort Saskatchewan alongside sons Mitch and Dylan, originally under the name ASAP Solutions Inc. before its recent rebrand to ASAP Traffic Inc. The company quickly expanded into sign manufacturing and installation, traffic equipment rental and product sales.

Mitch and Dylan grew up working in the industry, and combining their skills with Mark’s experience gave the family the chance to build a brand on their own terms and under their own name. All three owners stay hands-on; this involvement sets the tone for everyone on the team.

Two years ago, Mitch stepped into the CEO role, carrying the company into its next chapter. In April 2026, right at the 10-year mark, ASAP opened a Calgary yard – its second location and a clear signal of continued growth.

For Mitch, ownership changes the math on accountability.

“We’re owner-operated, so accountability isn’t a policy, it’s personal,” he says. “When something goes sideways on a job, it’s not a ticket in a system; it’s a phone call to someone who has their name on the company. We also have real in-house capabilities across flagging, sign manufacturing and equipment rental, so clients aren’t piecing together multiple vendors. Basically, we are a ‘one-stop shop.’”

Like many Alberta companies, ASAP Traffic finds staffing to be a persistent hurdle.

“Finding and keeping qualified, reliable traffic control and painting personnel in Alberta is consistently hard,” Mitch explains. “It’s a demanding job, the conditions are tough, many aspects are seasonal and the industry competes for the same pool of people.”

The company meets that challenge head-on with heavy investment in training and retention. Promotion often happens from within, so managers and team leads carry both the experience and the familiarity with the brand needed to keep raising the bar. That mix of long-term staff and even longer-term clients, many of whom followed Mark from Pillar, means consistency for every client.

For today’s project managers, the difference between a smooth job and a stressful one often comes down to the partner they choose. Increasingly, that means one company capable of handling the entire scope, backed by strong products and the kind of customer care that keeps projects moving. Client expectations have shifted, and they’ve shifted fast. Real-time communication is now the baseline, not a bonus. Teams want faster mobilization and a single point of contact who can own the project from start to finish. Project managers expect thorough documentation and full compliance delivered proactively, without having to chase anyone for it. Meeting those demands has pushed ASAP to build smarter systems and tighter processes, making the whole operation sharper and more reliable.

For example, the in-house manufacturing side plays a vital role. Rather than simply reselling signs and pylons, the company produces its own signage and keeps an on-hand inventory. That translates into faster turnaround, tighter quality control and the flexibility to take on custom and specialty work others might turn away. It’s a capability that consistently sets the company apart.

As Mitch and the team reflect on the first decade, they point to Mark as the catalyst for the milestone.

“We haven’t chased awards. The recognition that means the most is repeat business from clients such as FortisAlberta, EPCOR and ATCO Electric. Mark has had these companies as his clients since the early 2000s, way before we started ASAP,” Mitch says. “Mark’s decades in Alberta’s utility services industry and the reputation he built up over the years gave this company its foundation.”

He’s quick to share the credit with the field crews, too.

“The flaggers, painters and yard staff who show up every day in Alberta weather and do the hard work – none of this exists without them.”

The next 10 years are promising and exciting. Utility and roadwork remains a major driver of growth, fuelled by grid modernization and the ongoing build-out of Alberta’s power infrastructure. That’s where much of the current investment is concentrated, and it plays directly to ASAP’s strengths. Long-standing relationships with the province’s major utility players give the company a distinct edge as the industry shifts toward full-service providers.

The immediate focus is scaling that foundation without compromising the qualities that made it strong. Efforts are underway to expand the Calgary operations into a full-capacity yard, strengthen in-house sign manufacturing and build out internal systems so scheduling, reporting and client communication grow tighter and more consistent. The goal is repeatable processes that hold up at scale and depend less on individual knowledge – delivering reliable results no matter how large the workload grows.

After a decade spent building the groundwork, the next chapter is all about growing with intention, expanding capacity, refining systems and adding products, all while protecting the standards and customer care that set the company apart.

Mitch closes with advice worth heeding.

“If you need help, call us early. The biggest problems we see are when traffic control gets treated as a last-minute detail. Getting us involved in the planning phase saves time, money and headaches for everyone.”
